Xplorer Yachts New Build Project - Episode 1 - "PROPULSION SYSTEM"
We are designing and building a new global expedition yacht, and will be documenting the process over the next couple of years. In Episode 1 we talk about "The Mission" of the new vessel, and then dive right into the decisions we are making in regards to which propulsion system and fuel to go with.
We examine:
- Diesel-Electric
- Hybrid Systems
- Alernative fuels
- Fuel Cells
- Wind

    Small modular nuclear reactors: ua-cam.com/video/9cc1j-MbVVA/v-deo.html There are even smaller reactors than these in the pipeline. Westinghouse and other established firms have also come up with their small reactors. Nuclear reactors have been used on naval vessels for close to 80 years. 1- I would love to buy the S/Y Spirit of Venice, or the S/Y Sunday Morning, or commission a build of a 90ft version of the Antara with the specs I provided in the earlier comments: ua-cam.com/video/BzanKs2wHIQ/v-deo.html 2- I'd also love to have a go-anywhere version o the T6, which could economically suffice for most of my needs: ua-cam.com/video/8duK4vRLLGg/v-deo.html 3- In the extreme scenario, I wouldn't want a yacht more uneconomical than the Alucia. Yachts, generally, consume 25 gallons/hour for every 500 horses of power: ua-cam.com/video/uTkkPwpwiEY/v-deo.html

    I was a very strong advocate of trimarans, as a young man, but, now, that I've turned close to 60, I want something tried-and-tested, like mono-hulls. For those who wish to experiment, a smaller yacht based on the Independence Class littoral vessel would be the perfect compromise between ability and economy. It could even climb small packs of ice, just like an ice-breaker, to break them up with its weight. A flatter sailing trimaran with a retractable centerboard or swinging keel could also drastically diminish the possibility of capsizing. These, though, might still be too broad to navigate through the ice in the Arctic and Antarctic, and would also lack the energy(momentum = mass x velocity) to break the ice packs with impact. Since they're multi-hulls, these might not even survive impact with the ice, and rupture themselves. A yacht based on the Independence Class littoral vessel, though, could climb on top of the ice and break it with its weight. I would never buy a trimaran for myself because, at 58, I don't wish to risk things that haven't been exhaustively tested, but here are links to some exciting trimarans, down below: 1- Independence Class LCS: A shrunken version of this could even venture into the Arctic and Antarctic(provided it can refuel on the way): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independence-class_littoral_combat_ship#/media/File:Independence_(LCS_2)_in_drydock.jpg 2- Adastra: Too flimsy for rough weather, but the design lends itself to very spacious interiors and economical cruising: robbreport.com/motors/marine/adastra-trimaran-superyacht-1234628628/ 3- The Hanstaiger: This, again, has very good performance characteristics and spacious interriors, but like other multi-hulls could get stuck or broken in ice in extreme latitudes: www.hanstaiger.com/exceptional#exceptional5

    My priorities would be safety, autonomy, comfort and economy. I, personally, would choose two different yachts. A- A 90ft, aluminum hulled, ketch with a centerboard for economical cruising with just my kids or a couple of crew members for most of the sailing adventures. I want a ketch or a schooner because I feel unsafe with tall rigs/masts. Schooners don't perform well upwind, so ketches are generally preferred, but I'm not entirely convinced, so will even take a very close look at a schooner before I commission the build. I like the S/Y Spirit of Venice and S/Y Sunday Morning(Palmer Johnson), so might just purchase these off-the-shelf. I need 3 suites on this: A large, beam-width suite with a desk for myself; 2 comfortable, but not too spacious rooms for my kids; and a very spacious saloon that would serve as the epicenter of all activities. I don't like batteries, so I could opt for a backup diesel or ammonia drive for this. I don't care about emissions, unless they're regulated, but I want to be autonomous and economical. This could use a blend of solar and wind power at anchor(since neither source has round-the-clock availability and because I'm averse to large battery banks. I don't mind small banks for a few hours of emergency backup), and a (shaft-driven) water-turbine under sail. I might choose twin screws, two sets of twin rudders(like those on S/Y Pangaea), and twin drives. 90ft isn't too big, so I'd have to factor the space sacrificed into the equation. I don't want a yacht larger or smaller than 90ft to cruise with my kids. Smaller ones are too cramped, whereas larger ones need large crew complements. I might choose a Perini Navi interior for the sailing yacht and a San Lorenzo interior for the motor yacht. I also like Alberto Pinto, Mark Berryman, and Kelly Hoppen interior. B- A 160ft to 220ft motor yacht, like the Odyssey/Alucia or T6/V6). I need to be able to take this to explore the Arctic and the Antarctic, so would want a helicopter hangar(43ftx8ftx13ft) and a submarine/amphibious vehicle hangar(14ftx8ftx9ft), and the ability to service and fuel an occasional flying-in amphibious aircraft. I want a large saloon to serve as a social/party venue, a work place, an emergency hospital, and a school for my kids. I want a reasonably sized Sundeck and Sky lounge, and a small fly-bridge. These could also be swapped for other activities(office for myself or school for my kids) if the saloon is too busy to hold those activities. I want a shallow and a narrow pool, perhaps, where I could swim against a water jet. I want this to be 10 to 18ft long (depending on whether I swim against a jet, or actually swim the length), 4ft deep, and 7ft wide. I want my own suite to be spacious and equipped with a desk and a settee. I need the 3 guest rooms to comfortable, but not too spacious. I want the crew to share 2 dorms, each to sleep 8 people in 2-storey, single beds, two on each side. These dorms could also take in extra guests. I want the dorms to have 2 to 4 common showers and toilets. I want the engine room to also serve as a workshop. I would choose a nuclear reactor for both propulsion and facilities power, and, perhaps, back it up with wind, solar, or shaft power to only power the essential systems in the event of failure of nuclear power. You need to take a look at the new pico/micro nuclear reactors, they're very tempting, and they've been used on nuclear submarines, aircraft carriers and even surface vessels for decades. I might employ General Dynamics or a French specialty nuclear firm to provide a nuclear reactor designed specifically for marine use, even though modern, micro and portable nuclear reactors are turning quite common these days. I, though, am not too familiar with the regulatory turf on marine nuclear power. If I had the money, I would buy the S/Y Spirit of Venice or S/Y Sunday Morning(Palmer Johnson) and M/V Odyssey/Alucia off the shelf.

    • @ExpeditionYachts
      @ExpeditionYachts 18 днів тому

      As I understand it, a molten-salt reactor (MSR) is a class of nuclear fission reactor. I know Ulstein is promoting this, and they are accomplished builders. I suspect that there are regulatory and safety issues yet to be resolved and in our case, we would not want to be the 'prototype'.

    Let's start with...nothing is perfect. Wind...ok becalmed isn't fun. Neither is the gigantic mast required to move something as massive as the boat we are talking about. Throw in the fact that those masts are, well, lightning rods. Yep,getting whacked by lightning will do massive damage to the electrical systems. I have had my 43' sailboat hit by lightning. One last thing about wind. Crazy 50-100kt winds happen. The bigger the boat, the bigger the target. For a vessel this size, diesel electric hybrid is the smart way. Oops, almost forgot...wind is ssssssslllllllooooooowwwwwwww

    • @ExpeditionYachts
      @ExpeditionYachts 18 днів тому

      350 ft Black Pearl hits 30-knots under sail - but the rigs we are looking at will be used mainly to augment the main propulsion, to achieve fuel savings in the 30-50% range, while maintaining cruise speeds. They should also deliver 8-10 knots with only wind in ideal conditions. Any vessel sitting on the water is subject to a lightning hit, power or sail. The advantage of having a lightning rod/mast is that it is rigged for this and diverts the charge directly to the keel. All sail rigs reef, or fold away, for high wind.

    Great video. What about a methanol fuel cell that only creates hydrogen on a per need basis?

    • @ExpeditionYachts
      @ExpeditionYachts 18 днів тому

      In an abstract of a study in Science Direct, they state: "Direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC), as the most advanced fuel cell, has recently received much attention because of its unique advantages, such as high fuel energy density, facile liquid fuel storage, low working temperature, simpler system structure, and low emission of pollutants. However, DMFC is facing many challenging technical issues related to design, fabrication, and operation of its power systems that still remain unsolved. High manufacturing cost of DMFC is one of the main drawbacks, which hinders its successful commercialization. Mass transport of different species is another issue in DMFC which influences the performance, operating stability, and volumetric energy density of the system." Maersk is using it on one ship. I have read that green methanol comes from biogas captured from decomposing organic waste in landfills which is then upgraded to biomethane, injected into a gas grid and produced from the biomethane on a mass-balance basis. For now- there is no real supply chain, so it's not something we can consider.

    Very interesting, and while it wouldn't matter to most people, that dining room table holds 20, not 30. She holds a maximum of 20 guests. The General Layout shows a table for 20 (eight[8] on each side, two[2] at each end) and the picture at 2:30 (as well as at the link) shows eight(8) chairs max on the side. To make it 30 people, you would need five(5) more per side, which means the pirate painting would be off-centered as well as the table decorations. Having stated that, she seems to be a unique yacht at a good price if there are no hidden maintenance costs required.

    • @ExpeditionYachts
      @ExpeditionYachts 20 днів тому

      Good point. Not sure how they did their numbers. Being pirates, they may have put some of the guests on the table, or hung them from the overhead beams. As you said, it is a good price - but you can be sure that it needs plenty of work. There is a lot of 'deferred maintenance' and there are electrical issues.

    The man overboard boat must be able to launch within 5 minutes and have its own independent launching system or power system. If the main power goes out, that boat must have an alternative launching system. Manual, Electric, or Hydraulic winching. In addition to being a rescue craft for someone going overboard, it is the main boat used in case people go into life rafts. The life rafts would be gathered together and then tied to the tender as a means of propulsion. In addition, the life raft is to be kept with a minimum of a half a tank of gas at all times. But I think you knew all this you sly dog.

I may be wrong, but I also heard from another UA-cam channel was that Delta is the North American equivalent to Feadship.

    • @ExpeditionYachts

      Donald Starkey was the designer. The rumor-mill has it that Feadship's quote was too high, so the build went to Delta. And rumor-mill then reported that it ended up costing more at Delta than Feadship had bid. I have no direct knowledge.

      There are reputable OSV builders across the globe. For an expedition yacht based on an OSV hull, I would prefer Spain, Scandanavia, or Louisiana.

    I was on the crew that built these TAGOS boats at Tacoma Boat Corp in Washington. Still have a couple pages of sshop drawings and blueprints somewhere.

    PS. In Sweden, no car is not allowed to leave the road (any) road, unless it’s on your own property of course. So all the campers and stuff you see in commercials “camping in the wild nature” is actually not allowed, should you abide the law to the letter… ATVs, snow mobiles etc usually need the owners permission to go on their lands. On state owned land, certain trails are offered and marked that you have to stick to. However, we also have the “Allemans-right” that permits all people to use nature (on foot) basically everywhere, as long as you leave no trace, trash behind, or destroy anything. Wonderful. So to take an extreme off-road monster machine and just ravage straight into nature (as shown in the end of your video) would be a big no no in Sweden 😅

    Could be the greatest yacht ever built 👌🏻. Happy Roger bought it to cater for a “new” market in Scandinavia

    I’d love to convert an OSV And install a moon pool in a pressurized section to house a mini submarine that could be launched from under the hull of the ship and a great space for divers to enter and exit the water with a recompression chamber close by.

    Why did NOAA not repair the ship and continue to use it?

      I have no idea. It was very efficient to run, but probably the manning requirements were large. Its official mission was to map ocean floor in Pacific, but many believed that with its range and speed its real mission was to track and follow Russian subs.

      I think it was too large to be practical for normal NOAA missions. Their fleet is generally comprised of much smaller vessels. As rumor has it, these larger ships were built and deployed during the cold war and their funding and missions may have been for tracking Russian subs.

    Just sailed on the new Celebrity Ascent and the bow design peaked my curiosity. I noticed more side roll than older ships. Great explanation, thank you.

      Captains of the various new designs talk about peculiar 'motion', excessive bow spray, and getting 'knocked sideways'. I always look to see what the commercial operators are doing as they are most mindful of crew comfort, safety and economy - not necessarily in that order.
